In Remembrance Arthur R. Lewis (1931-2025)

The purpose of human life is to serve and to show compassion and the will to help others.
--Albert Schweitzer

The Radnor High School Scholarship Fund would not be the vibrant organization it is today without the vision and decades-long leadership of Arthur R. Lewis. Art left us on August 5, 2025, at the age of 94, an active member of our Board of Governors until his final day.

Mr. Lewis’s life was dedicated to his family, his church, and community service. The four Lewis children attended Wayne Elementary School, Radnor Middle School, and Radnor High School. A past Radnor Township Commissioner, Art was especially known for his involvement with the Radnor Schools serving on Radnor’s School Board from 1991 to 2007, and as president from 1993-1998. He was the driving force behind the major renovation of Radnor High School, and he oversaw the building of Radnor Elementary School and the new Radnor Middle School.

Art’s involvement with the Scholarship Fund dates back to 1984. Since that time he served the RHSSF as board member, assistant treasurer, president, and most recently past president. His presidency spanned 33 years, from 1989 to 2022, when he stepped down from that leadership role at the age of 91.

During Art’s tenure the Radnor High School Scholarship Fund made significant growth and assisted over 1,100 Radnor graduates with need-based scholarships exceeding $4.6 million in committed funds.

Art was the face of the Fourth of July Fireworks held annually at Radnor High School as a fundraising event for the Radnor High School Scholarship Fund. He closed each Independence Day celebration with Roy Rogers and Dale Evans’ recording of Happy Trails—a much-loved local tradition—as spectators made their way back to their vehicles. As the Art Lewis era of the Radnor High School Scholarship Fund ends, we look back on his legacy and look forward to a future inspired by his leadership.

Happy Trails, Art . . .

Two Community Volunteers Remembered
Through Named Scholarships

Two Radnor alumni, Stephen H. “Grumpy” Pendergast and Donald A. Wood, were remembered through named scholarships at the annual Radnor High School Scholarship Fund Reception and Scholarship Presentation on Monday, June 9, in the RHS courtyard. Ciani Reneau received the Stephen H. Pendergast Memorial Scholarship, and the Donald A. Wood Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Ipek Erim. Both men dedicated many years and countless hours to the community they both loved.

Stephen H. Pendergast (1942-2015) affectionately known by the moniker, “Grumpy,” was a proud member of the RHS Class of 1960. He was devoted to his alma mater as well as his hometown—graciously donating his time and talents to the Alumni Association of Radnor High School, the War Memorial on South Wayne Avenue, the Radnor Historical Society, and Radnor’s “Has-Beens.” In addition, Steve volunteered in Bryn Mawr Hospital’s Emergency Room for over thirty years. He was an aficionado of rare coins and stamps, turning his avocation into a vocation.

Steve was dedicated to Radnor High School, not only to the Class of 1960, but to the football program and researching the history of his alma mater. As a student he participated in football, basketball, and track, but his connection to Radnor football lasted throughout his life as a member of Radnor’s Has-Beens. Founded in 1945, the Has-Beens is composed of former varsity football players and team managers who meet annually the night before the storied Radnor-Lower Merion football game. The organization sponsors an award each year presented to the team’s Most Valuable Player. Steve’s avid interest in Radnor Township history, particularly that of Radnor High School, led to countless hours of research and dedication to preserving school history in digital format. He was the “go to guy” for all questions concerning Radnor High School’s past.

Donald A. Wood (1936-2024) was a lifelong resident of Wayne and a member of the Radnor High School Class of 1954. Don graduated from Lehigh University in 1958 with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering. In addition, he earned an M.S. in Education from the University of Pennsylvania (1962), an A.A.S. in Fire Science Technology from Delaware County Community College (1981), and an M.S. in Human Organization Science (1991).

Mr. Wood taught Physics at Radnor High School for thirty years and was an active fireman with the Radnor Fire Company for an incredible sixty-two years. His association with the RFC began as a teenager with other RHS seniors known as the “School Boy Firemen.” This group got its start at the outset of U.S. involvement in World War II. With several of the active firemen called into service, a number of high school boys were trained as active firemen to take their places.” In those days, the high school was located next to the fire house. When the siren sounded, these boys left their classes to run to the firehouse to serve their community. (Information from the archives of the Radnor Historical Society).

During his years with the RFC, Don wore many hats serving as Ambulance Committee Chairman, EMS Manager, Treasurer, Safety Officer, Second and third Assistant Chief, and three separate terms as Fire Chief. He also served as Fire Marshal for Radnor Township for twenty-two years. Don took great pride in teaching at the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Maryland.

The RHSSF is honored to present these two named scholarships which have been made possible through memorial donations from family, friends, and members of the Radnor community.
